RELIABILITY MODELING-A SIMPLE BUT
EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR EARLY DECISION MAKING
Abstract
Ultra deepwater developments, with associated high costs of
failure, can benefit greatly from a thorough knowledge of the
reliability and availability of associated system selections. By
applying reliability modeling techniques in a timely fashion,
these highly effective measures can influence the early
decision making process leading to significant cost savings for
the ultra deepwater investor/operator. This paper outlines a
technique for using reliability engineering tools to analyze
field architectures for ultra deep developments and to focus on
how some configurations and use of redundant equipment may
or may not help in the overall performance. The paper will
demonstrate how these tools will enable decision makers to
streamline designs and better define operational metrics as a
percent of expected revenue. Different example field layouts
such as “daisy chain”, clustered manifolds, individual satellite
tiebacks, and template arrangements will be compared to
reveal advantages and weaknesses in operational performance
using reliability engineering tools.
