The Cambay Basin is defined by a series of major en-echelon north northwest - south
southeast bounding faults that parallel the Dharwar Trend in the underlying basement
complexes. This north northwest - south southeast trend is also reflected in
intrabasinal highs and synthetic/antithetic fault systems across the basin, and cut across
the northeast - southwest Delhi - Aravalli Trend and the east northeast - west
southwest Satpura Trend that also occur in the basement. The interaction of these
cross trends with the main structural trend of the basin, lead to the development of
several individual tectonic blocks which had different morphologies, orientations and
subsidence histories resulting from movements along these trends. From the north to
south, these blocks are: Patan-Tharad, Mehsana-Ahmedabad, Cambay-Tarapur,
Jambusar-Broach and Narmada-Tapti blocks.
