The north-south, right-lateral transform stress, generated by plate motions between
India and Antarctica, created second order motions between India and Sri Lanka,
leading to development of the Cauvery Basin depressions in a pull-apart manner. The
northeast-southwest trend may have been dictated by a pre-existing shear zone in the
Precambrian crustal block of southern India.
