China University of Mining & Technology (Beijing), or CUMT-Beijing was established on the basis of Beijing Graduate School of China University of Mining & Technology (CUMT). In 1978, with the approval of State Council, CUMT Beijing Graduate School started to enroll postgraduate students and doctoral candidates. In 1997, with the approval of China Education Commission (now China Ministry of Education) and Beijing Municipal Government, CUMT-Beijing was developed into a multi-disciplinary polytechnic university in Beijing. CUMT-Beijing is located on Xueyuan Road, the university zone in Haidian District of Beijing, with the National Olympic Park to the east and the Summer Place, the Yuanmingyuan Ruins Park as well as the Xiangshan Park to the west. The campus covers a total area of 217,000 square meters and a floor space of 223,000 square meters. The university's fixed assets amount to 279.95 million RMB and its library has holdings of 330,000 volumes.
CUMT-Beijing is an important part of China University of Mining & Technology. Giving priority to engineering among other disciplines of science, liberal arts and management, CUMT is a leading multi-disciplinary polytechnic university with mining features. It has been officially approved as one of the first universities for the national "211 Project". The predecessor of CUMT was Jiaozuo School of Railroad and Mines founded in 1909. In 1950 the school was moved from Jiaozuo to Tianjin and renamed China Institute of Mining & Technology (CIMT). In 1952 during the nationwide restructuring of universities and colleges, the mining engineering departments of Tsinghua University, former Beiyang University and Tangshan Institute of Railroad were merged into CIMT. In 1953 CIMT was moved to Beijing and became Beijing Institute of Mining & Technology; in 1970 the Institute was moved to Sichuan province and renamed Sichuan Institute of Mining & Technology accordingly. In 1978 the Institute was moved to the present new location in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province and restored its original name CIMT. In 1988 the Institute was formally named China University of Mining & Technology (CUMT). CUMT was officially approved as one of key universities in China by the government in 1960 and in 1978 respectively. In February 2000 CUMT was transferred to be under the administration of China Ministry of Education (CME) and became one of the state universities directly supervised by CME. In June 2000 Graduate School of CUMT was officially approved by China Ministry of Education.
Currently CUMT-Beijing consists of one graduate school and 9 academic schools (School of Safety and Resource Engineering; School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering; School of Mechanical, Electronic and Information Engineering; School of Management; School of Mechanics, Architecture and Civil Engineering; School of Basic Science And Arts; School of Continuing Education; School of Vocational Technique Education in CUMT-Beijing; School of Safety Science and Technology). It also has 7 national key disciplines, 9 provincial key disciplines, 5 first grade disciplines conferring degrees for both Doctor and Master, 8 construction programs of key disciplines in the "211 Project" during the period of the Tenth Five-Year-Plan, 7 disciplines offering positions for Special Appointment Professor by "Cheung Kong Scholar Program", and 9 post doctoral research stations. At present CUMT-Beijing possesses 53 specialities for undergraduates, 70 specialities for Master candidates and 31 specialities for Doctoral candidates, one key laboratory under China Ministry of Education, one key laboratory under Beijing Municipal Government, and more than 20 laboratories in various disciplines, Coal Slurry World Laboratory, Sino-Japan Stratigraphic Environmental Mechanics Research Center and International Exchange Center. In addition, the university is authorized to enroll MBA, EMBA and Engineering Master candidates.
CUMT-Beijing now has a total of 665 faculty and staff members, including 300 full-time teachers. Among the academic staff, there are 7 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering (including 2 honorary academicians of CUMT-Beijing), 63 supervisors for doctoral candidates and 130 supervisors for master candidates, 77 full professors and 108 associate professors. The university boasts to have 2 winners of National Young Scientist's Award and its Nomination Award, 4 winners of National Distinguished Youth Foundation and 3 teachers who were titled as National Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Expert. 4 of them were selected as National-level Outstanding Talents, 1 was awarded National-level Excellent Teacher and 6 have been designated as Outstanding Talents for the next century by China Ministry of Education. With years of efforts, CUMT-Beijing has established a multi-level education pattern emphasizing simultaneously development of graduate, undergraduate and adult education. At present the student body of CUMT-Beijing totals over 6800, including more than 3900 undergraduate students, 2400 graduate students and 500 students receiving adult education.
Over the years, considerable progress has been made in terms of teaching, scientific research reforms and teaching quality. From 2000 to 2002, 4 doctoral dissertations from CUMT-Beijing were evaluated as top-100 nation-wide outstanding dissertations, and 1 staff has been entitled the top-10 excellent post-doctoral researchers, an award established for the first time in China. Since its enrollment of undergraduate in 1998, CUMT-Beijing has made great efforts to improve undergraduate education quality and effectiveness and made remarkable teaching achievements. In 2001, over 90.3% of 1999 year students passed grade 4 of College English Test (averaged passing rate in China is 73.2%). Students from CUTM-Beijing have also done excellent jobs in Beijing Mathematics Contest for Non-math undergraduates for the preceding three years, including the overall rank of 6th in the 13th Contest of 2001, one top-grade award (from the total of two), 2 second-grade award and 2 third-grade award in the 14th Contest of 2002. Students from this university also won 1 top-grade award and 1 second-grade of Team A in the 18th Beijing College Student Physics Contest. For many years the university has paid rigorous attention to scientific research and development. During the period of the Ninth Five-Year-Plan, CUMT-Beijing has undertaken 44 National Tackle Key Projects, including 6 National Hi-Tech 863 Projects, 10 National 973 Projects, 4 National Tackle Key Projects for the Tenth Five Year Plan, 4 Distinguished Youth Foundation Projects and 1 Innovative Scientific Research Group of National Natural Science Foundation of China. 72 research projects in CUMT-Beijing has attained national, ministerial or provincial level Science and Technology Awards, among which 9 are National Award for Science and Technology Progress, 18 are Science and Technology Progress Award of China Ministry of Education. So far 2982 academic papers in CUMT-Beijing have been published. Over 400 research projects are now being undertaken by CUMT-Beijing, including 22 important projects such as National Tackle Key Projects for the Tenth Five-Year-Plan, National Hi-Tech 863 Projects, 973 Projects and Innovative Scientific Research Group of National Natural Science Foundation of China, 35 projects of National Natural Science Foundation, and over 70 scientific research projects of provincial or ministerial level. A number of national key projects, such as high-water rapid solidifying backfill material technology, coal water fuel preparation technology, silicon carbide whisker technology and industrial coal briquetting technology, have been transferred into productivity, achieving favorable economic and social profits.
CUMT-Beijing has paid great attention to international academic cooperation and exchange, and has established such educational ties with dozens of foreign universities and academic organizations. Many teachers from CUMT-Beijing go abroad every year for international academic exchange and cooperative research. The 4th International Symposium on Mining Science & Technology ('99ISMST) was successfully held at CUMT-Beijing in August 1999 In August 1999. In April 2001, the 29th International Symposium on Computers Applications in the Mineral Industries (APCOM2001) was held at CUMT-Beijing and this is the first time that APCOM symposium series was ever convened in Asia as well as in developing countries. In October 2001 CUMT-Beijing convened 175th XiangShan Scientific Conference focusing on mining problems at great depths. In 2002, CUMT-Beijing established cooperative education programs with both University of Nottingham and University of Leeds by sending excellent undergraduates to these two universities to pursue master and doctoral degrees.
