VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA - An internationally funded ocean research vessel has returned to port after a two-month expedition off the Oregon coast, bringing with it the largest amount of marine methane hydrate core samples ever recovered for scientific study.

Concentrated gas hydrate (white material) covered with mud. This core was obtained on the Blake Ridge during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 164. The sediment bubbles are caused by the breakdown or dissociation of the gas hydrate, which is not stable at standard atmospheric pressure and room temperature. [attachment=7338]
