Your team is responsible for the redevelopment of a recently acquired field in a developing country. The country has been involved in a period of major conflict which has devastated the economy and reduced much of the local population to poverty. Considerable social tensions still exist in the region.
Your company has acquired the field in 50:50 partnership with a major Far Eastern company on the basis of improving production above current levels. It will be rewarded on $/barrel basis against an agreed base line. All costs will be re-imbursed by the host government on an agreed basis (an agreed field development plan). Penalties will be imposed if production falls short of the agreed level.
The field has a sour 30 API crude and an estimated 3 billion barrels of oil in place in shallow marine sands at a depth of 2500m. It has a 1Tcf gas cap. The recovery factor is low and
existing wells are simple vertical wells, now ageing. Gas production has started to rise rapidly as rates have been increased to compensate for well integrity problems. Produced gas is currently flared.
Your task: to develop a new operating plan for the field.
Points to consider include: gas disposal, supply chain constraints, drilling and completion technologies, sour crude production, regional security and social responsibility to the local communities.
